"Liminal Distance is the recording name of Adrian North. I live on the edge of beautiful bushland in Perth, Western Australia, and in real life I’m a professor who publishes research on the psychology of musical taste. The music and artwork are all about the people, places and things close to home. All the artwork was produced either within 50 metres of home or while with my family, and everything is recorded at home too. " – Adrian North
"I have published over 100 scientific journal articles on musical taste, along with three books. This has informed my own music in a few ways. In general terms I’ve published a few pieces of research showing that the most common use of music is relaxation, and in particular while people are on their way home from work or school. Consequently I deliberately decided to do specifically ambient music as we all know this can help people keep calm and it fits in with the stream of other activities that people are doing while they listen. I also composed and performed the individual tracks with this in mind. Unlike most ambient tracks, which are typically well over five minutes long, each of my tracks track is short, as people in the stream of their everyday life often don’t have time to listen to longer pieces. Most of my tracks are only three minutes long. I also kept the tempo slow - most pieces are around 60 beats per minute, whereas dance music for example is usually over 140 bpm - and avoided any harsh timbres in the instruments I used. The research shows that these aspects of music can reduce people’s overall level of physiological arousal." – Adrian North
