Tibor Varga

Like the classical-romantic repertoire, Tibor Varga's interpretations of the Violin Concertos by Bartók, Berg and Schoenberg have become major reference points for future interpreters.Through numerous (first) performances, as far as South Africa and Australia, Tibor Varga had raised the Violin Concertos by Bartók, Berg and Schoenberg to the status of “classics” of the repertoire, assuring them a prime position in musical life. The Vienna Première after World War II of the Berg Violin Concerto in June 1946 was a tremendous success, as was the Australian Première realized by Tibor Varga in Melbourne. At the London Royal Albert Hall, where Tibor Varga was regularly invited at the “Prom’s Concerts”, he interpreted the Berg Violin Concerto along with the Violin Concertos by Brahms, Schoenberg, Shostakovitch and others, under enthusiastic applause, elevating this “painful requiem [...] [to] a moving event as a whole due to the unsurpassably played solo part: an indescribably poignant rendition by Tibor Varga, whose mastery was so far above matter that the sad singing took on unearthly luster.” (Het Parool, Amsterdam, Jan. 1967, relating to one of Tibor Vargas interpretations of the Berg Violin Concerto in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw)Visit
